Midjourney vs ChatGPT Images vs Canva AI for marketing visuals
Midjourney, ChatGPT Images and Canva AI all make images from a prompt. How they differ on plans, brand control and who each suits, from their own plan pages.

Midjourney, ChatGPT Images and Canva AI can all turn a sentence into a picture in under a minute. They are three different kinds of product. Midjourney is a dedicated image tool, ChatGPT is a chat assistant that can also draw, and Canva is a design tool that has added AI image creation. Which one suits your business depends on what you do with the image next.
This comparison is based on each company’s plan pages as they stood on 26 October 2026. We have not run a hands-on test of all three on the same brief, so we say where a claim comes from and where you should check for yourself. We have also not verified the current licence wording for commercial use on any of them, so read that before you publish anything you sell.
Key takeaways
- All three make an image from a prompt. They differ most in what surrounds the image: Midjourney sells generation time, ChatGPT sells an assistant, and Canva sells a design workspace.
- Canva is the only one of the three with a Brand Kit, so it is the natural choice when images must match a brand and end up in a template.
- Midjourney prices by GPU hours and has no free plan on the page we read. Its cheapest plan is $10 a month.
- ChatGPT Plus is €23 a month including VAT, and the same subscription also writes, analyses and builds custom assistants.
- Check commercial use and data terms for your own plan before using any generated image in paid work.
Which is the Best AI image Tool for a Small Business?
There is no single winner, because the three tools start from different places. A fair way to compare them is to ask what you are trying to avoid. If you want to avoid paying for a tool you use twice a month, the one already in your budget is the answer. If you want to avoid off-brand output, Canva has the most mature tools for it. If you want to avoid switching apps, ChatGPT keeps the image next to the text.
The table below sets out what each company says about its own plans.
| Question | Midjourney | ChatGPT Images | Canva AI |
|---|---|---|---|
| What is it at heart? | A dedicated image and video generator | A chat assistant with image creation | A design tool with AI features |
| Cheapest paid plan we read | Basic, $10 a month ($8 annual) | Plus, €23 a month including VAT | Pro, €110 a year |
| Free plan on the page we read | No | Not shown on the page we read | Yes, up to 20 Standard or Premium AI uses |
| What limits use? | Fast GPU hours per month | Plan usage limits | AI uses per plan |
| Brand control | Not listed on the page we read | Not listed on the page we read | Brand Kits: 1 on Free, 5 on Pro, 100 on Business |
| Team plan | Not listed on the page we read | Business, from €21 a seat a month annual | Business, €170 a year per person |
Read the table as a starting point, not a verdict. The row that matters most to you will differ from the row that matters most to someone else, and the sections below take them one at a time.
What is Midjourney?
Midjourney is an image and video generator that you pay for in hours of generation time. Its plan comparison page lists four plans, and they differ mainly in how much Fast GPU time you get each month.
| Plan | Monthly price | Annual price | Fast GPU time | Relax mode | Stealth mode |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Basic | $10 | $96 ($8 a month) | 3.3 hours | No | No |
| Standard | $30 | $288 ($24 a month) | 15 hours | Unlimited images | No |
| Pro | $60 | $576 ($48 a month) | 30 hours | Unlimited images and SD video | Yes |
| Mega | $120 | $1,152 ($96 a month) | 60 hours | Unlimited images and SD video | Yes |
Fast time is the quick queue. Relax mode, from Standard upwards, is unlimited but slower. Extra Fast time costs $4 an hour on every plan. Stealth mode, which the page lists only for Pro and Mega, is the feature to look at if you do not want your work to be visible to others. The page also lists the option to work solo in Discord direct messages, and the number of prompts you can run at once rises from 3 on Basic to 12 on Pro and Mega.
For a business, the practical point is that cost scales with how much you make. A team that produces a handful of images a week may never leave Basic. A team producing images daily will want Relax mode, which starts at Standard.

What is ChatGPT Images?
ChatGPT Images is image creation inside ChatGPT. You describe what you want in the same conversation where you draft the caption, and you can ask for changes in plain language. The plan page we read lists “advanced image creation with Thinking” among the Plus features, alongside advanced models, expanded memory, deep research, projects and custom GPTs.
Plus costs €23 a month including €4.30 of VAT. The Business plan is priced per seat, at €21 a month for a Standard seat and €105 for a Premium seat on annual billing, with the Premium seat described as five times the usage with no five-hour limit. Business also adds a secure workspace with single sign-on, usage analytics and spend controls, and states that there is no training on your business data by default.
The strength here is not the image on its own. It is that one subscription covers the image, the writing around it and the rest of your AI work.

If you are new to the tool, our guide to ChatGPT for small businesses covers what else the same subscription does, and is it safe to connect ChatGPT to Gmail, Drive or SharePoint covers what to check before you give it access to company files.
What is Canva AI?
Canva AI creates images inside the Canva editor, so the result lands on a page you can resize, caption and export. The plan page lists AI usage on each plan: up to 20 Standard or Premium AI uses on Free, ten times more than Free on Pro and twenty times more on Business, with an AI Pass add-on available for extra cost.
| What the plan page lists | Free | Pro | Business |
|---|---|---|---|
| Price | €0 | €110 a year | €170 a year per person |
| AI usage | Up to 20 Standard or Premium AI uses | 10x Free | 20x Free |
| Brand Kits | 1 (3 colours only) | 5 | 100, with approvals |
| Cloud storage | 5GB | 100GB | 500GB |
| Team admin tools | No | No | Yes |
Canva’s real advantage for marketing is everything after the image: templates, resizing for each channel, scheduling social content on Pro and above, and a Brand Kit that holds your colours, fonts and logos. Our Is Canva Pro worth it? review covers what the paid plan adds in more detail.

How do the three create an image?
The routes differ, and so does what you do with the result.
- Midjourney: you write a prompt and choose a mode. Fast gets the result quickly and uses your hours. Relax, on Standard and above, waits in a queue but does not use them. You then download the image and use it elsewhere.
- ChatGPT Images: you describe the image in a conversation and ask for changes in the next message. The image comes with whatever text you asked the assistant to write alongside it.
- Canva AI: you generate inside a design, so the image arrives on a page with your Brand Kit, and a template can resize it for several channels.
If your process ends with a finished post, flyer or advert, the tool that builds the page matters as much as the tool that draws the picture.
ChatGPT Images
Describe the image in a conversation
Ask for changes in plain language
Download the image
Place it in your post, site or document yourself
Canva AI
Open a design or template at the right size
Generate the image inside the page
Apply your Brand Kit and add editable text
Export or schedule it from the same place
How do you write a Prompt that gets a usable image?
A good image prompt is a brief, not a wish. The same habits that make a prompt work in a chat assistant apply here, and our short explainer on prompt engineering covers the general craft. For images, five details do most of the work: the subject, the setting, the style, the shape of the image and what must not appear.
Name the subject
One clear thing
Set the scene
Place, light, mood
Pick a style
Photo, flat, illustration
State the shape
Square, wide, tall
Say what to avoid
Text, logos, faces
Keep the wording you settle on. A business that writes its best prompts down in one shared place, a prompt library, gets a consistent look from any of the three tools and does not depend on one person remembering what worked. It is also the cheapest form of brand control there is, and it costs nothing on any plan.
Which one keeps your brand consistent?
Canva is the only one of the three whose plan page lists Brand Kits: one on Free, five on Pro and a hundred on Business with approvals. That means colours, fonts and logos sit in the same place as the image.
The page we read for Midjourney and ChatGPT does not mention brand tools for images. That does not mean you cannot get a consistent look from them. It means you will build that consistency yourself, by reusing the same description of your style in every prompt and checking each image against your guidelines before it goes out. A short written style note, kept in one place, does most of the work.
Which one is Best for text on an image?
Text inside generated images is where every image generator needs a check. Misspelt words and odd letter shapes are a common failure, and we have not tested these three against each other. Do not assume any of them is safe on this point.
The simplest rule is to treat generated text as a draft. Either check every letter, or generate the picture without text and add the words afterwards in a design tool where you choose the font. Canva makes the second route easy, because the text is a normal editable layer.
Is it Safe to put customer Data into an AI image Tool?
Only after you have checked the settings and terms for your plan. A picture of a person, a product shot with a visible client name or a screenshot of a dashboard can all be personal or confidential data once it is uploaded.
The Business plan page for ChatGPT states that there is no training on your business data by default. We did not read an equivalent statement for the other two on the pages we used, so check Midjourney’s and Canva’s terms for your own plan. Under GDPR, a customer’s personal data needs a lawful basis wherever it goes, so keep it out of a prompt unless the work truly needs it. Our guide to what is safe to paste into an AI tool sets out a simple rule, and a shadow AI problem is exactly what happens when staff use a personal plan for client work.
Decide what the image needs
Faces, names, figures
Check the plan
Business differs from personal
Check the settings
Training and sharing
Check the visibility
Who can see your work
Review the output
Before it goes live
A written AI use policy settles these questions once for the whole team, and an AI tool inventory tells you which tools people are already using. If your images reach people in the EU, our guide to what the EU AI Act requires of a small business covers duties that may apply to AI-generated content, and the glossary entry on GDPR explains the data side.
How much do the plans cost?
| Plan question | Midjourney | ChatGPT Images | Canva AI |
|---|---|---|---|
| Is there a free plan? | Not on the page we read | Check OpenAI’s plan page | Yes, with up to 20 AI uses |
| Cheapest paid plan | Basic, $10 a month | Plus, €23 a month including VAT | Pro, €110 a year |
| Middle of the range | Standard, $30 a month | Business Standard seat, €21 a month annual | Business, €170 a year per person |
| Top of the range | Mega, $120 a month | Business Premium seat, €105 a month annual | Enterprise, by quote |
Prices are in the currency each page showed us, so do not add them up without converting. Midjourney quotes dollars, and ChatGPT and Canva quoted euros on the pages we read. Prices change often, so use each company’s plan page for today’s figure.
Which should you choose?
| If this describes you | Start with |
|---|---|
| You make social posts, flyers and decks in Canva already | Canva AI |
| You must keep a strict brand look across several clients | Canva AI, with a Brand Kit for each |
| You already pay for ChatGPT and want the image and the caption in one place | ChatGPT Images |
| You produce a high volume of images and want to iterate quickly | Midjourney, on Standard or above for Relax mode |
| You want work kept out of public view | Midjourney Pro or Mega, which list Stealth mode |
| Your team needs shared admin and spend controls | ChatGPT Business or Canva Business |
| Client confidentiality is the main concern | Whichever your organisation has reviewed and approved |
The last row matters more than the others. A tool the business has checked is worth more than a better tool nobody has looked at.
What should you check before you publish an AI image?
A generated image looks finished whether or not it is right. Treat it the way you would treat a draft from a new freelancer: look at it closely before it goes anywhere. A human in the loop is the simplest control, and it costs a minute per image.
- Details that are wrong. Hands, product parts, logos, signs and small print are where generators slip. The same invented detail that causes a hallucination in text can appear as an extra button on a product or a street sign in the wrong language.
- Text. Check every word and number letter by letter, or add it afterwards in an editor.
- Real people and real brands. Do not use a generated image to suggest an endorsement, a customer or a likeness you have no permission to use.
- The licence. Read the terms for your plan before you use the image in paid work. Canva publishes a Content Licence Agreement, Midjourney publishes Terms of Service and OpenAI publishes terms of use. We have linked them for you to read and have not summarised them here.
- A second pair of eyes. If the image will reach customers, have another person look at it first. Our guide to checking AI output before it goes to a customer sets out a routine that works for images as well as words.
The habit is easier to keep when the whole team shares it. Our article on how to train your team to use AI covers building it, and the glossary entries on AI adoption and upskilling explain why a tool nobody was shown how to use rarely earns its price.
How do you test all three in one afternoon?
The best evidence is your own, and it costs one afternoon. Pick three images you actually needed last quarter: a product shot, a social post and a header for a document. Give all three tools the same brief, the same brand colours and the same wording.
Then measure what happened, not how it felt. Write down how long each took to reach an image you would show a colleague. Count the corrections: prompts you rewrote, text you fixed, crops you redid. Open each result at the size you will publish it. Check the data and sharing settings on each, as covered above. Finally, ask the person who will post it which one they would prefer to put their name behind.
You will probably find that the tool with the best first image is not the one with the fewest corrections. That is the number to trust.
Our verdict
Canva is the safest choice for a small business that already designs in it and cares about brand control, because the image lands on a page with your colours and fonts. ChatGPT Images is the most convenient if you already pay for ChatGPT and want the picture and the words in the same conversation. Midjourney is the specialist: it makes sense when images are a large part of your work and you are happy to pay for generation time.
None of them removes the need for a person to check the image. They produce confident, polished results, they can misspell words and they can get a detail wrong. Look at every image before a customer does. Our guide to checking AI output before it goes to a customer sets out a simple routine.
If your team is still deciding which AI tools to adopt, that choice is exactly what an audit is designed to answer, weighed against how your people actually work. Once a tool is chosen, a core AI course is what turns it into a habit.

FAQ
Questions we get asked
Which is better for Business Images, Midjourney or ChatGPT?
Neither wins in every case. Midjourney is a dedicated image tool sold on hours of generation time, so it suits people who make a lot of images and want to iterate on them. ChatGPT Images sits inside a chat assistant that also writes, so it suits people who want the image and the copy in one conversation. Test both on one real brief before you pay for either.
Can Canva make AI Images?
Yes. Canva's plan page lists AI usage on every plan: Free includes up to 20 Standard or Premium AI uses, Pro lists ten times that, and Business twenty times. Canva also places the result straight into a design that can use your Brand Kit.
How much does Midjourney cost?
On the plan comparison page we read on 26 October 2026, Midjourney lists four plans: Basic at $10 a month, Standard at $30, Pro at $60 and Mega at $120. Paying annually brings each down, for example Basic to $8 a month. There is no free plan on that page.
How much does ChatGPT cost for making Images?
The plan page we read shows ChatGPT Plus at €23 a month including €4.30 of VAT, with advanced image creation listed as a feature. Business is priced per seat: a Standard seat at €21 a month on annual billing and a Premium seat at €105. We did not read a figure for the free plan, so check OpenAI's page for what it allows.
Which AI image Tool is Best for text in an image?
We have not run a hands-on test, so we will not name a winner. Text inside images is a known weak spot for image generators in general. Give each tool the same headline and check the spelling letter by letter, or add the text afterwards in a design tool such as Canva, where you control the font.
Can I use AI Images commercially?
That depends on each company's terms and on your plan, and we have not verified the current wording of all three. Read the content licence or terms of use for the exact plan you pay for before you use a generated image in an advert, on packaging or in anything you sell.
Is it Safe to upload customer photos to an AI image Tool?
Only after you have checked the tool's data settings and terms for your plan. A photo of a person is personal data, so GDPR applies wherever it is uploaded. Business and team plans usually carry stronger default protections than personal ones, and ChatGPT's Business plan page says there is no training on your business data by default.
What is the cheapest way to make Business Images?
If you already pay for Canva, ChatGPT or Midjourney, the cheapest option is the one you already have, because the prices are close enough that your time matters more. On the plan pages we read, Canva Pro is €110 a year, Midjourney Basic is $96 a year and ChatGPT Plus is €23 a month.
